Wool - the natural fibre choice
Wool is possibly the oldest fibre known to humans. It was one of the first fibres to be spun into yarn and woven into a fabric and is prized for its beauty and durability. Wool mostly comes from sheep but also from alpacas, camels, goats, and llamas.
Wool has many favourable characteristics which include being naturally resilient, resisting abrading and easily accepting a wide range of colours when dyed. It is a "warm" fibre used for centuries to insulate. By its very nature it is also fire resistant, soil hiding, able to repel moisture and is easy to clean or maintain. A wool carpet can absorb up to a third of its own weight in moisture and not feel wet. This moisture is released back into the environment and holds down static electricity. Wool wears gracefully and has a certain elegance and luxury that no other fibre can replicate, natural or man-made.
An often very forgotten aspect of wool is its excellent acoustic or sound insulation. MONN Rugs will help to dampen sound enormously especially in an environment or room using many hard surfaces such as walls, glass, and hard flooring.
Wool is the most reusable and recyclable fibre on the planet. The eco-credentials of wool are further enhanced by its long service life and suitability to be recycled. At the disposal stage, in warm, moist conditions such as in soil, wool biodegrades rapidly through the action of fungi and bacteria to essential elements (i.e., Nitrogen and Sulphur) for the growth of organisms as part of the natural carbon and nutrient cycle.
Wool is the ultimate carpet fibre and at MONN we insist on using only the best carpet wools from producers in Great Britain and New Zealand for all our MONN Wilton, MONN Axminster and MONN Rug Collections.
There are several advantages to blending fibres in textiles. Often the weaknesses of one fibre are countered by the strengths of another. In Axminster carpeting the world-wide standard is a blend of 80% Wool and 20% Nylon. This is the accepted and internationally accredited blend to achieve the ultimate Axminster carpet fibre adding durability, strength, and stain resistance. To further ensure the integrity of the materials that comprise your MONN Rug this perfect blend of 80% Wool and 20% high permanence nylon fibres is blended, carded, spun, and dyed on-site at our state-of-the-art mill in Harrismith.
